100 years ago, an association from Barcelona was the first in promoting aviation in Spain. The "Asociación de Locomoción Aérea" was born on december 1908 in Barcelona with the purpose of promoting aeronautical culture, which was beginning to root in neighbouring France. Besides a magazine which echoed the endeavors accomplished by aviators all over the world, the "Asociación de Locomoción Aérea" was also the first in bringing an airplane to Spain. Although there's still controversy on the subject of the first flight over spanish territory, the visit of french pilot Lucien Mamet with his Blériot XI to Barcelona in february 1910 was clearly the best documented one.
Taking off from the old Can Tunis horse track, the french pilot marvelled the crowd of barcelona residents that had gone see this incredible invention, which many skeptics had criticised during the weeks prior to the flight, deeming impossible that such a heavy machine could leave the ground.
This year, the Festa al Cel remembers the valuous work done by this association, and claim the passion for aeronautics for the city of Barcelona.
