Barcelona is lucky and proud to host the oldest and largest airshow in Spain. A show of speed, expertise, and technology that brings together more than 300.000 people every year on the city seafront.
After some years in which, as part of the city festivities (La Mercè) there were some kite flights off the beaches of Barcelona, in 1992, the city council, with the goal of bringing people to the recently renewed beaches, enthusiastically receives the offer by Rafael Salvadó, president of the R/C Aero Club Barcelona-Sabadell.
Salvadó proposes a series of R/C displays as part of the city festivities, with such a good welcome from the city that, the following year, the city asks the Aero Club Barcelona-Sabadell to add their aircraft to the show.
Thus, the airshow is born, celebrating 20 years on 2011, and which grows year after year with the help from the industry, the Spanish Air Force, the Spanish Navy, the Spanish Army, aerobatics champions, and international performers both civilian and military.
The organising comitee
An airshow is an event that requires a great deal of coordination between a large number of institutions, a high level of technical expertise, and total respect for flight safety.
The Festa al Cel organiser is the Barcelona City Council, initially through the Institut de Cultura, personified in Mr. Francesc Fabregat. After that, from 2008, the airshow is organized by the Strategic Sectors Departament, in the Finance, Enterpreneurship, and Occupation Area at the Barcelona City Council.
The goal of this change is to make the airshow a priviledged showcase for the Barcelona aerospace industry.
The coordination of everything airborne is assigned to Aero Club Barcelona-Sabadell, represented since the first airshows by Mr. Pepe Rubira until 2008, when he joins the Airshow Honor Comitee and Mr. Daniel Ventura González Alonso takes over.
The task of the coordinator is to find the airshow pieces (both performers and airshow director) and assemble them in such a way the show is both appealing and safe, always consulting with the organizer and the director.
The Airshow Director and his technical team is the responsible for airshow safety, controlling the display area and coordinating the operations with ATC.
Our thanks go to the excellent work done by past directors: Mr. Juan Esteban Linares, Mr. Emilio Marín, and Mr. Antonio Gil, who combined their occupation as Air Traffic Controllers with their vast experience in the airshow world.
At present, the Airshow Director is Mr. Xavier de Martí, Air Traffic Controller from Gavà ATC Centre.
Every year, the City Council designates via public tender the event production company. The last two years, this company has been Mediasports Marketing, part of the MediaPro group.
